After being stripped of his Tour de France championships, Lance Armstrong is currently facing the revocation of his 2000 Sydney Olympic bronze medal. Armstrong, the American who has served as the face of professional cycling for the last decade, has been accused of using and distributing performance enhancing steroids, and has, over the course of just a few months, seen all of his victories removed by the Tour de Franceai??i??s ruling body, with the results of races between 1998 and 2010 declared void.
Armstrong began his career as a professional cyclist in 1992. In 1995, he was diagnosed with advanced testicular cancer, which had spread throughout his body, and was given a less than 40% chance of surviving treatment. After several surgeries and a cocktail of drugs, he returned to cycling and began to dominate the competitions in which he participated. It was only a few years after his cancer diagnosis that he set a record for his seven consecutive overall wins in the Tour de France, between 1999 and 2005.
Today, each of those wins has been ruled void by the ruling commission of the Tour de France, and the entirety of the results have been disqualified due to allegations for rampant steroid use by the majority of competitors. Armstrong himself was plagued with suspicion of doping throughout this period, most prominently in the press in 2004. While that particular surge of allegations was settled out of court between Armstrong and the newspaper in which they were published, new evidence emerging in 2012 thrust Armstrong back onto the defensive.
In June 2012, the United States Anti-Doping Agency charged Armstrong not only with using performance enhancing drugs, but of masterminding a sophisticated distribution ring among professional cyclists. The charges carried with them a life-time ban on professional cycling in the United States. On October 22, 2012, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) issued their support for the USADAai??i??s ruling, and confirmed Armstrongai??i??s ban from competitive racing.
In light of these charges, the UCI organized a panel to investigate the relationship between Armstrongai??i??s dope usage and distribution and professional cycling. The three members of the panel were appointed at the end of November, and expect to present their findings in June 2013.
Additionally, Armstrong is now facing the revocation of the bronze medal he was awarded for the road time trial during the 2000 Sydney Olympic games. The International Olympic Committee will discuss the status of Armstrongai??i??s placement when they meet in Zurich in December, and whether or not the medal will be revoked on account of the steroid charges.
Armstrong continues to deny all doping charges, and to his credit, has never failed any of the regular drug tests he submitted to in the last twenty years.
