Dr. Jerry Buss, the owner of the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Kings, passed away last week. Though he died of kidney failure, it was revealed shortly before his death that he had been battling cancer for more than a year, and his fatal illness was linked to that struggle. Buss, a widely beloved celebrity sports team owner, was popular in the Los Angeles area, and known as much for philanthropy and wild personality as much as for his business acumen.

Buss quickly graduated from college and moved to Los Angeles to acquire a Masterai??i??s in chemistry from the University of Southern California. He continued working in the sciences, and soon started teaching at the school. After having children, he felt that he needed to provide more security for his new family. He invested $1000 into an apartment building, which had a very large return and set him on a path of real estate investments.

After earning a fortune with his real estate dealings in the late sixties and early seventies, Buss decided to invest in a sports team. He bought the Los Angeles Strings, part of the now defunct World Team Tennis league. Shortly after, he purchased the Los Angeles Lakers, the Los Angeles Kings, and the stadium at which they played, the Forum, for about $70 million dollars.

Buss reinvigorated the Lakers at a time when professional basketball was waning in popularity. He introduced a live band into the games, and encouraged Hollywood celebrities to sit in courtside seats. When he bought the team, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was the center, and when he picked up Earvin ai???Magicai??? Johnson, the team took off in popularity.

Always the less popular of Bussai??i?? two teams, the Kings were never viewed as second-best by Buss. The owner was committed to building a strong Californian hockey team and driving up the popularity of the sport in the Southwest. He aggressively ran the team and offered his players cash incentives for goals, defeats, and championships.

Both of his teams became wildly popular and continued to be popular until the time of his death.

Buss was also known for his wild antics around town. He was known to date and hit the town with women thirty and forty years his junior, and drove expensive, flashy cars. He also made significant donations to his alma matter, USC. He was an avid high-stakes poker player, and a regular fixture at card tournaments and the race track.

A tribute was held before the Lakers game on Monday. 17-year Laker player Kobe Bryant addressed the Staples Center after a moving video tribute was played on the stadiumai??i??s television screens. He pointed to the Buss familyai??i??s suite at the stadium, and led the sold-out crowd in a moment of silence. After the stadium speakers played a clip of Buss expressing his desire for the Lakers to be identified with Los Angeles and vice-versa, the Lakers went on to beat the Boston Celtics. Each player wore a patch on their jersey with Bussai??i?? initials in tribute.
