The Australian open saw a major upset in the recent match of Serena Williams against Ana Ivanovic. Williams came into the match riding her second longest win streak of 25 matches, as well as a plethora of Grand Slam titles and an impressive 2013 record: she won 78 out of 82 matches. Despite the odds stacking against her, Ivanovic stuck it out and took the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Williams cited her own mistakes, partly due to a back injury, as a major cause of the loss. She was quick to commend Ivanovic’s play though, “I feel she played unbelievable today.” When asked about William’s presence in a Grand Slam, Ivanovic lauded the star, “I think she’s done so much for the sport, and she’s still doing it.” Ivanovic will go on to play Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in the quarterfinals. On the men’s side, the three time defending champion, Novak Djokovic, continued his winning streak, taking out Fabio Fognini. Djokovic felt that the tournament was going well and his play was picking up as he progressed through the rounds. He even treated the audience to an impersonation performance of his coach Boris Becker. Djokovic will go on to face Wawrinka, fresh off of a win against Tommy Robredo.
